Looking older than you feel? Let’s track down the sneaky saboteur.

Noticing fine lines, dullness, or dark spots creeping in a little too early? Sure, we all know the sun can give us a tan (and a not-so-cute sunburn), but what you may not know is that it’s also behind a little villain called photoageing.

Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can still reach your skin — meaning the sun’s ageing effects don’t take time off, even when the weather looks like it has. And since it’s UV Awareness Month, we’re shining a light on how these invisible aggressors speed up the ageing process, and how to fight back.

The Lowdown on Photoageing

You could be doing everything right — cleansing, toning, moisturising, masking — but if you’re skipping sunscreen, you’re basically leaving your skin defenceless.

Fine lines, pigmentation, rough skin texture, and dullness can all show up early thanks to repeated sun exposure. And the worst part? Many people don’t realise it’s happening until it’s already written all over their face (literally).

Meet Photoageing: Your Skin’s Sneakiest Frenemy

Photoageing is the premature ageing of skin caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays and unlike natural (intrinsic) ageing, it’s totally preventable. UV damage weakens your skin’s structure by breaking down collagen and elastin, the building blocks of firm, youthful skin.

Translation? Wrinkles, sagging, uneven skin tone… and not the kind of glow-up you were hoping for.

Even brief exposure during your lunch break or commute adds up, especially if you’re not protecting your skin daily.

UVA vs. UVB: A Quick Breakdown

UV light from the sun comes in two main forms — UVA and UVB. Both can harm your skin in different ways.

1. UVA  (“A” for ageing)

UVA rays have a longer wavelength which allows them to penetrate deep into your skin’s dermis, the layer responsible for elasticity and firmness. Over time, this breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging. As UVA rays are present all year long, even on cloudy days, its damage builds up silently and gradually.

2. UVB (“B” for burn)

UVB rays in contrast have a shorter wavelength and primarily affect the epidermis, your skin’s outermost layer. They are more intense and are the main cause of sunburns. Its damage doesn’t stop here; it can also cause hyperpigmentation (sunspots) and direct DNA damage in skin cells which increases the risk of premature ageing and skin cancer.

Spotting the Sneaky Signs of Photoageing

Photoageing doesn’t just happen beneath the surface; it eventually shows up in ways that change how your skin looks and feels. One of the earliest and most common signs? Fine lines and wrinkles, especially in areas most exposed to the sun, like around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.

Hyperpigmentation is another big giveaway. These dark spots or uneven patches form when your skin produces excess melanin in response to UV damage — think sun spots and blotchy tone. Over time, you might also notice your skin losing its natural bounce, leading to reduced firmness and sagging.

Your skin’s texture can change too — becoming rough, dry, or uneven. In some cases, tiny red veins known as broken capillaries may appear, especially around the cheeks and nose. These signs tend to build up progressively, but they become more obvious if your skin isn’t properly protected from the sun.

The Hidden Chaos Beneath Your Skin

Photoageing isn’t just about what you see on the surface; the real damage begins deep within the skin. When UV rays penetrate the skin, they can damage the DNA in skin cells, not only speeding up the ageing process but also increasing the risk of mutations that may lead to skin cancer.

Concurrently, UV exposure triggers the formation of free radicals — unstable molecules that attack healthy cells and tissues. These free radicals break down collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that keep your skin firm, smooth and plump.

UV rays also activate enzymes called MMPs (matrix metalloproteinases). These enzymes degrade collagen and elastin fibres, weakening the skin’s foundation and making it more prone to wrinkles, fine lines and sagging.

To make matters worse, UV exposure induces inflammation, further damaging skin cells and accelerating collagen loss. Over time, this leads to uneven texture and crepey skin, one of the more stubborn signs of photoageing.

The result? A slow (but totally avoidable) breakdown of skin texture, elasticity, and repair mechanisms, all from unprotected sun exposure.

Hit Undo on Sun Damage!

While photoageing may sound scary, the good news is that it’s highly preventable! With proper care, you may reduce the damage, and minimise its effects of photoageing.

Step 1: Sunscreen.Every.Single.Day.

One of the most important steps in skincare is daily sunscreen application. Use a broad spectrum SPF that helps to defend your skin against UVA and UVB rays, preventing damage before it starts.

Our no. 1 recommendation for no makeup days!

SunShield SPF 50*** offers high protection with broad-spectrum and anti-blue light protection without feeling heavy on your skin. It is enhanced with microcapsule colour-adapting pigments that gives your skin a peachy tint while it blurs your pores for a “my-skin-but-better” finish.

Finally a sunscreen that does not break you out!

The water-based SunShield Aqua SPF 50*** delivers an ultra-lightweight finish — loved by oily, combination and acne-prone skin customers. This non-comedogenic formula provides a breathable protection that is perfect for daily use even when layered under makeup.

Step 2: Target the Damage with Antioxidants + Peptides

To target existing signs of photoageing, it’s important to use ingredients that address both the damage done and the repair needed. That’s where antioxidants and peptides come in. Antioxidants help neutralise free radicals that accelerate ageing, while peptides support skin repair by boosting collagen production and encouraging cell regeneration.
