But first, is it okay to use more than one serum at a time?
The golden rule here is “less is more”!
One serum is usually sufficient, given its high concentration. About 3-4 drops are sufficient for the entire face and neck. Also, you should only layer serums if they offer unique benefits and address different skin concerns.
Here are some key points to take note:
1. Apply serums in the order of thickness or consistency, starting with the thinnest serum and ending with the thickest one.
2. Water-based serums should be applied before oil-based serums, as they are typically lighter and often contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid or antioxidants.
3. If you’re using serums with active ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, or glycolic acid, apply them first in your routine, immediately after cleansing.
4. Allow each serum to absorb for a short while before applying the next one. This helps prevent pilling and ensures that each serum has adequate time to work its magic.
Do not: retinoids with exfoliating acids
Retinoids pack a powerful punch in terms of effectiveness, but their potency also brings an increased risk of skin irritation and sensitivity. For optimal results, we do not recommend combining retinoids with any other exfoliating serums.
Even though our LumiWhite 10% PHA Resurfacing Glow Serum is among the gentlest and most effective exfoliating serums available, we still advise against using it together with retinoids. Mixing these ingredients can alter their pH levels, potentially reducing their individual efficacy. Therefore, it’s better to use them separately to maximise their benefits.
Do not: benzoyl peroxide with exfoliating acids
If you have severe acne, you might have thought of using the PurClear Anti-Acne Serum with benzoyl peroxide. However, combining these two products may lead to skin redness and irritation as the PurClear Anti-Acne Serum contains salicylic acid, which is a form of BHA.
Both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are effective ingredients for treating acne, but they work in slightly different ways. Benzoyl peroxide functions by eliminating acne-causing bacteria, while salicylic acid penetrates into pores to unclog them, reduce inflammation, and improve skin texture.
Due to its potency, benzoyl peroxide has the potential to cause dryness, redness, peeling, and increased skin sensitivity, especially for new users. While it is not impossible to use them together, we recommend using them separately to ensure safety and minimise the risk of adverse reactions.
Maybe: BHA with other exfoliating acids
AHAs, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, primarily work on the skin’s surface and are effective for issues like fine lines, dullness, and uneven skin tone. On the other hand, BHAs, such as salicylic acid, are oil-soluble and can penetrate into pores, making them ideal for tackling blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.
To start, consider using AHAs and BHAs on separate days to observe how your skin responds. Once your skin becomes accustomed to both acids, you can explore using them on the same day, with one applied in the morning and the other in the evening. If you’re unsure about the concentration of each acid to begin with, we recommend using a safe pre-formulated product that contains a combination of both, such as the PurClear Detoxifying Mask.
Maybe: PHA with other exfoliating acids
PHAs function similarly to AHAs but are generally milder, making them suitable for individuals with sensitive skin. You can use both the LumiWhite 10% PHA Resurfacing Glow Serum and PurClear Anti-Acne Serum together, but it’s crucial to introduce them gradually to prevent over-exfoliation or skin irritation.
Start by incorporating one of the serums into your routine, and once your skin has adjusted, you can add the second serum. Using them on alternate days or during different times of the day can also be a good approach to prevent potential irritation. Monitoring how your skin responds will help you determine the frequency and combination that works best for you.
Do: humectants with occlusives
Maximise your skin’s hydration by combining humectants, water-attracting substances that draw moisture to the surface layers, with occlusives, which form a protective barrier on the skin’s surface to prevent water loss through evaporation. This dynamic duo helps seal in moisture, enhancing the efficacy of humectants.
Experience the power of hydration with our ActivCalm Skin Quenching Serum, a humectant, paired with ActivCalm Anti-Stress Hydra Cream, an occlusive. Together, they work synergistically to optimise hydration, addressing both surface dehydration and deeper moisture needs. The result? Balanced and supple skin. This versatile combo is suitable for almost any skin type. Say hello to a well-hydrated and radiant complexion!
Do: antioxidants with SPF
