When you went out for a good time but came back feeling worse for wear.

Facials are a nice addition to your skincare routine for a dose of pampering-cum-treatment for your skin. They are customised treatments that don’t just help you relax, but also improve your skin condition. You expect to leave the salon feeling rejuvenated with your freshly treated skin.

But… what happens if your experience (or your skin!) is ruined?

A facial can go wrong in many different ways – you could end up with red and inflamed skin, get a sudden breakout, or notice scabs forming on parts of your face.

It may be traumatising to experience any of the above, but worry not, as there are ways to help calm, soothe, and heal that unfortunate post-facial plight.

But let’s try to figure out why the facial experience did not deliver as promised. Surely, it’s not because the aesthetician has a bone to pick with you?! ?

1 – Redness and Inflammation

There are a variety of reasons to explain why your skin appears red and inflamed after a facial treatment. If it’s not from over-exfoliation due to strong peels or microdermabrasions, it may be a result of excessive pimple squeezing or incorrect extraction techniques. Or you may be experiencing an allergic reaction. If you have sensitive skin, it may also be due to enzymes that increase heat and cause redness and inflammation to occur.

What should I do?

Avoid irritating the skin further by skipping makeup on the affected areas. Makeup removers can also irritate the skin due to the tugging motion. Reach out to your aesthetician and check if it’s an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients used during the facial. Get antihistamines from your doctor to keep the allergy under control.

2 – Breakouts

Post-facial breakouts can occur when whiteheads and bumps that are deep in your skin are manually extracted. An opening is created to remove them, but this opening also provides a pathway for whatever is deeper down in your skin to come out. While this is good for your skin – it’s basically cleansing itself from the inside out – you wouldn’t want to go through the purging process when you have an important event to attend. Consult your aesthetician and plan your facial ahead to avoid untimely post-facial breakouts.

What should I do?

Try the PurClear Nano Silver AG+ Essence, which is an antibacterial soothing gel that clears and prevents the formation of acne and blackheads effectively. Pro-tip: store it in the fridge and use it as a cooling mask to close open pores and soothe angry zits.

3 – Scabs

Scabs appear due to heavy-duty extractions, which happen in order to unclog pores and get rid of the black/whiteheads on your skin. The skin is liable to breaking during the extraction process. And what happens when your skin breaks? It heals the open wound by forming a scab over it!

Scabs can also form if your skin already has wounds and a strong peel is applied on the affected area. Using an acid peel over an open wound will cause trauma to the skin and result in more scabbing. While the aesthetician should take note of these areas, you should also inform them of your sensitive spots so as to avoid any form of aggressive peeling treatments.

What should I do?

Scabs are a part of your skin’s natural healing process, so you should leave them alone and let them do their job. DO NOT pick the scabs as it will prolong the overall healing process!
