The difference between DPL and IPL

With new beauty treatments appearing faster than your latest skincare haul and lots of confusing names, it’s easy to get lost. So, let’s clear things up. Today, we’re breaking down the difference between DPL and IPL –  what they are, how they work, and which one might be right for you.

The Core Principle: What Do IPL and DPL Have in Common?

Both IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and DPL (Dynamic Pulsed Light) are photofacial treatments that use selective photothermolysis. This simply means they utilise specific wavelengths of light to target skin structures without harming the surrounding tissue.

How Do These Light Rays Actually Work?

1. Pulses of light with specific wavelengths are delivered onto the skin or hair.

2. Chromophores – basically your skin or blood vessel pigment – absorb the light energy.

3. The absorbed light then converts into heat.

4. The heat selectively damages targeted cells, like pigmentation spots, broken blood vessels, or hair follicles.

5. The body’s natural healing process clears away damaged cells and stimulates new, healthy skin growth.

Long term, this process reduces hair growth, diminishes small blood vessels, and fades pigmentation.

What Skin Issues Can IPL and DPL Tackle?

Pigmentation: sun damage, age spots, and freckles

Vascular Issues: rosacea, redness, and visible blood vessels

Skin Texture: dullness and loss of firmness

Acne: by targeting bacteria and reducing redness and inflammation

Hair Removal: by destroying hair follicles for long-term reduction

The Big Differences: IPL vs DPL (in a Nutshell!)

FeatureIPLDPL
TechnologyBroad spectrum (500-1200nm)Narrow, focused spectrum (500-600nm), the “sweet spot” where melanin and haemoglobin absorb light most efficiently
EfficiencyLess targeted, some energy dispersesHighly concentrated energy for better results

ComfortTypically warmer, can be more uncomfortableOften described as more comfortable

CostGenerally more affordableHigher investment

Which One is Better for You?

Still undecided? Here’s a quick summary:

  • Choose IPL if you have fair skin and want an effective, budget-friendly solution for hair removal or mild pigmentation.
  • Opt for DPL if you have darker or sensitive skin, or if you want targeted treatment for pigmentation, age spots, or skin rejuvenation.
