2020 is cancelled. Don’t jinx us 2021.
We start off every year with a new year’s resolution, and while most of us found it hard to actualise our 2020’s resolutions, let’s not let a bad year throw us off course or hold us back. Even though 2020 hasn’t been the easiest year, we’ve now gotten accustomed to this new norm, so let us make the most out of what we can this new year!
1) Work-life balance
While some of us have transitioned back to the office 9-6 grind, the rest of us are still working from home. #WFH may sound appealing, but it also blurs the line between work and leisure, and challenges us to have a proper work-life balance. With our work station now at home, we tend to ignore the fact that we’re entitled to a proper lunch break or that work ends when it does, and naturally, just put in overtime.

Don’t tie yourself to work, but make it a point to separate these two, especially when you’re at home. This will help to improve your productivity at work, and also increase the quality time you have for yourself and your loved ones at home.
2) Stress management
Stress often falls under the radar and goes unnoticed, until it’s too late. By then, we’re often knee-deep in our stress and are unable to pull ourselves out of that black hole easily. One thing to keep in mind is that stress can be apparent, even if you do not outrightly feel it.

Remember to make time for yourself, at least 1-2 times a week, to unwind and just relax, and keep your mind away from work and your worries. It could be just a small pocket of time, for an hour or two, where you can truly let go of anything that’s troubling you. As the Chinese saying goes, taking a break is for accomplishing a longer journey. Which brings us to the next point!
3) Adopting a healthy lifestyle
Did you know that a healthy lifestyle can help to reduce stress? When you exercise, neurochemicals called endorphins are released in your brain, which then triggers a positive feeling of well-being, making you feel happy and relaxed.

Apart from exercising, try also to incorporate healthy food options such as drinking more water, eating leafy vegetables and fruits, or even something as simple as having a well-balanced diet. More than just being good for your health, consuming these will also help to improve your overall skin health! Yes, drinking more water can help to clear your complexion, and ingesting fruits and vegetables high in vitamins and antioxidants are also great for your skin!
4) Be intentional in your shopping
Perhaps you’ve found yourself making more (online) purchases than you normally would this past year? Subconsciously, travel restrictions due to COVID-19 may have led many of us channelling our expenditure elsewhere, and this probably led to a surge in your online buys or you may even find yourself splurging on luxury items such as jewellery, branded bags or shoes.

While there is nothing wrong with treating yourself every now and then, a good habit to adopt when shopping is to make sure that you truly need the item. Ask yourself if your purchase would make an improvement to your life, or if this purchase would be easily forgotten weeks or months after the purchase.
Another thing to consider is if your purchase can be swapped out with another which is more sustainable and eco-friendly for the environment! Many brands are making a conscious effort to swap out single-use packaging with sustainable choices, and you as a consumer can do your part by purchasing from these brands instead!

5) Indulging in self-care
Self-care falls under a broad spectrum. It could be taking time out to head to the spa for a self-pampering sesh, netflix and chill in the comfort of your pyjamas, a 5-minute meditation or simply indulging in your favourite home cooked meal. What really matters is that you’re carving time out to do something pleasurable for yourself.

While it may seem like you’ve accomplished nothing significant in 2020, give yourself a pat on the back for surviving a global pandemic! Perhaps this is also the best time to press pause and reset your life’s priorities, and be fully present in the moment.
